The Stranger in Apartment 14 | A Mystery Story

The New Neighbor

When Lucas moved into the old apartment building on Maple Street, the landlord gave him three rules.

“No parties after midnight.”

“No smoking inside.”

“And don't knock on Apartment 14.”

Lucas laughed.

“Why?”

The landlord didn't laugh.

“Because nobody lives there.”

Lucas looked at the hallway.

Apartment 14 was directly opposite his own.

The door was old and covered with several layers of paint.

“Is it empty?”

“It has been for years.”

Lucas nodded.

He thought nothing more about it.

Until his first night.

At exactly 1:13 a.m., someone knocked on his door.

Three times.

Lucas opened it.

The hallway was empty.

Then he heard a door closing.

Apartment 14.

---

The Light

The next morning, Lucas asked the landlord about it.

“I heard someone in 14 last night.”

The landlord stared at him.

“Impossible.”

“I heard the door.”

The landlord shook his head.

“Forget it.”

That evening, Lucas noticed something strange.

A thin line of light was visible beneath Apartment 14's door.

Someone was inside.

Lucas walked toward it.

He raised his hand.

Then stopped.

The landlord's warning came back to him.

Don't knock.

Lucas returned to his apartment.

At 1:13 a.m., the knocking came again.

This time, it wasn't from his door.

It came from Apartment 14.

---

The Note

The following afternoon, Lucas found an envelope beneath his apartment door.

There was no name on it.

Inside was a handwritten note:

“You have the wrong apartment.”

Lucas didn't understand.

On the back was another sentence:

“Look at the number on your door.”

Lucas looked.

His apartment was 15.

Nothing unusual.

Then he noticed a tiny mark beneath the number.

A second number had been scratched into the wood.

14.

---

The Old Photograph

Lucas went to the building's basement.

There were boxes filled with old documents.

He found photographs of the building from different years.

One photograph showed the hallway.

Lucas stared at it.

There were only thirteen apartments.

No 14.

No 15.

He found another photograph.

This time there were fifteen doors.

Apartment 14 was there.

But Lucas was standing in front of it.

He dropped the photograph.

The date was 1986.

Lucas hadn't been born yet.

---

The Previous Tenant

The landlord finally agreed to talk.

“Who lived in 14?”

“A man named Daniel.”

“When?”

“1986.”

“What happened?”

“He disappeared.”

Lucas looked at the old photograph.

“Was he ever found?”

“No.”

“Then why is the apartment still here?”

The landlord looked toward the ceiling.

“Because sometimes it isn't.”

Lucas frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“Some nights there are fourteen apartments.”

“Some nights?”

The landlord nodded.

“And some nights there are fifteen.”

---

1:13

That night, Lucas stayed awake.

12:50.

1:00.

1:10.

At exactly 1:13, the hallway lights went out.

A door appeared where there had previously been a blank wall.

Apartment 14.

Lucas stepped into the hallway.

The door was open.

Inside was a small apartment frozen in time.

An old television.

A newspaper from 1986.

A cup of coffee on the table.

And a man sitting beside the window.

Lucas recognized him from the photograph.

Daniel.

The missing tenant.

Daniel looked at Lucas.

“You shouldn't be here.”

Lucas couldn't speak.

“You've been missing for forty years.”

Daniel smiled.

“Only from your time.”

---

The Missing Years

Daniel explained that Apartment 14 existed between two moments.

Anyone who entered could become trapped outside normal time.

He had entered in 1986 while searching for a missing document.

The door closed behind him.

When it reopened, decades had passed.

“But you look the same.”

Daniel looked at his hands.

“Time doesn't work properly in here.”

Lucas asked:

“Why did you call me?”

Daniel pointed toward the wall.

There was a photograph.

It showed Lucas standing inside Apartment 14.

But the date was tomorrow.

Daniel said:

“Because you're the next person the apartment has chosen.”

---

The Document

Daniel gave Lucas an old envelope.

Inside was a property document.

It revealed something unexpected.

Apartment 14 had never belonged to the building.

The entire room had been added secretly in 1958.

The original owner believed the room could preserve objects outside normal time.

He used it to hide valuable documents.

Eventually, people discovered the room.

Some entered.

Some disappeared.

Daniel had been one of them.

Lucas looked at the document.

“Why me?”

Daniel pointed at the final page.

Lucas's name was written there.

Below it was a date.

Tomorrow.

---

The Choice

Lucas wanted to leave.

Daniel stopped him.

“You can.”

“How?”

“Take the document outside.”

“And you?”

Daniel smiled.

“I've been waiting forty years.”

Lucas understood.

The room wasn't keeping Daniel prisoner anymore.

He was staying because he believed someone had to protect the secret.

Lucas stepped through the doorway.

The hallway was normal again.

Apartment 14 had disappeared.

Daniel was gone.

---

The Next Morning

Lucas woke up at 7:30.

He wondered whether it had all been a dream.

Then he found the document on his desk.

It was real.

He took it downstairs.

The landlord was waiting.

The moment he saw the document, he sat down.

“Daniel found it.”

“You knew?”

The landlord nodded.

“My father was the one who built Apartment 14.”

Lucas stared at him.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because every person who learns about it eventually goes looking for the room.”

Lucas looked toward the stairs.

“Is it gone?”

“For now.”

---

The Final Knock

Lucas moved out three weeks later.

He never returned to Maple Street.

Years passed.

He almost forgot about Apartment 14.

Then one night, while living in another city, Lucas heard three knocks on his apartment door.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

He looked at the clock.

1:13 a.m.

Lucas didn't move.

Then a piece of paper slid underneath the door.

He picked it up.

There was only one sentence:

“You still have the wrong apartment.”

Lucas looked at his door number.

15.

Slowly, beneath it, another number appeared.

14.

And somewhere on the other side of the wall, a door opened.

The End
